Get Further by Alyssa Turner

Get Further ( Working It In #3 )Get Further by Alyssa Turner
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Kara+Cole might seem like a happy couple to their fans, but they need more to be truly happy. Cole is keeping a secret from Kara. She thought she had her GBFF locked down. They both had no idea what JP could bring to the table. I love that this story takes place on a sight seeing train, what a cool way to see the country and get to know more about your love interest. I listened to the audiobook and LOVE the authentic accent of Brooke Chambers as Kara. She's a new narrator to me and I am definitely listening to her any chance I can get.

The Pippaverse

Some authors capture their characters so well that you feel like a part of the group.  Pippa Grant has done that with the interlaced worlds of The Bro Code, The Girl Band, The Thrusters Hockey Team, and the Copper Valley Fireballs.  Along with a handful of standalones mixed in for our favorite outliers.

I am drawn to these types of books that hook you into a group of friends and take you along the winding path of friendships and relationships. Her website offers both chronological and series style reading lists which I find incredibly helpful when so many series have spin-off books. Sometimes you want to follow a team through their books, other times you want to find out what happens next in the timeline. I love that about Pippa's reading list options.

She is also very generous with the epilogues and bonus epilogues... and sometimes even a bonus bonus epilogue.

I had read a handful of these books about a year ago, but when I was cruising audible, as one does, I found a few of her series had starter bundles! I snagged those so fast my audible credits didn't know what hit them. The narrators are top notch, all fantastic work from every single one of them.  Most are names that I keep on my favorites list!  Click here to check out the available titles on audio and some samples

I swear this post is not sponsored, I just love these books so much I want everyone to be able to fall in love with this awesome group of friends and family.  As you can see by the checklist above I only have a few of the series books left!

My current Pippa Grant book is JockBlocked.  It's about a superstitious super fan who can't talk to players and a ball player who is traded from his home team to the losingest team in the league. There are hijinks, runaway mascots, and banana cream donuts. Mackenzie makes her debut in America's Geekheart but gets her love story in JockBlocked.  If you ever worried that you were a little too invested in your favorite team reading this one might make you feel sane.

The big news in the Pippaverse is that Cooper Rock is finally getting his book!  Cooper is in so many of these books and he is such an awesome guy, he totally deserves the happiest of endings. I cannot wait to see what kind of trouble he gets into first.

Pippa does have a few books that do not specifically cross into this pile of goodness.  Those books are amazing too! I will likely include them in other posts or reviews so I won't detail them here. Just know that her excellent writing and humor carry through those titles as well.

Look! It's Cooper's cover!!

Review: Unleashed

TITLE: UNLEASHED (UNMATCHED #2)
AUTHOR: ALYSSA TURNER
LINK: GoodReads Amazon

This sequel is on fire.  I was so wrapped up in Samantha and her fellas.  I cannot decide who is my favorite and lucky for me (and you) we don't have to choose... or do we?  This book takes us on a few trips and we get to know Henri a little better too. Where Oleg is dark, Henri is serious.  Sam is just the kind of woman who can handle their special brand of torture. Don't worry, Ivan and Paulo are along for the ride too.  I truly wish Samantha's designs were real. I would have a closet full of them!

Recommend: For sure. Especially for fans of Reverse Harem or menage.
Content Warning: Blood/knife play.  No real injury, but we are aware that some people are uncomfortable with this particular kink. No shame, just love.

Review: Her Boss

TITLE: HER BOSS
AUTHOR: KAT CATESBY
LINK: GoodReads Amazon

This slow burn sets things on fire.
You'd think the owner of a night club with a members only sex club upstairs would be with whoever he wants, but Dixon can't seem to bring himself to ask out the girl he likes. Maddie is the coolest. She does aerial and erotic dance on poles and hoops and dreams of opening her own studio. She wants Dixon, too.  They KILL US with their tension but in a way that hurts so good.  While their friends are moving forward in life they are struggling to figure out how to navigate each other.

The real obstacle... Dixon "Dix" Cooper's nickname isn't just short for his name... it is a big clue to one BIG obstacle that he isn't sure Maddie can handle.

*We met Maddie in Her Cowboy and Dixon in Her Firefighter but you don't need to have read either one to jump in on this book.

Recommend: Yes, yes, OHHHH YES!
"Heady" Count: None!! Yay!
Favorite Phrase: "I've been burned one too many times and Maddie Wilson looks like an inferno that would raze me to the ground."

Review: Unscripted

I dont plan on doing this often but I'm giving this post a disclaimer. This book has several gay or bi characters. So, if you're reading my blog because you love me and support my writing I expect you already know that I'm gay-friendly, if you can't handle that kind of content please kindly close your web browser and move along quietly. I will allow no discriminatory comments no matter how much I love you.

Title: Unscripted
Author: J.R. Gray

I'm overdue for a post, sorry about that. I had an assignment due and got behind. So without further ado; a review. (How'd you like that rhyme. I nailed it)

This book was excellent. Like, I shall now consume all of the authors works before the week is out, excellent.

Basics: Straight actor makes a gay pirate show based on a book, casts gay costar, become bffs, attraction ensues.

I cannot explain how happy it makes me when authors capture something hard to describe. Quell suffers with anxiety and depression. Many times it's just a passing mention in books, especially the romance genre. Not for this book. The depth of pain and struggle for the main character was thorough. It was palpable. It was honest. Thank you Mr Gray for writing it this way.

Despite the pain and confusion Quell goes through this book captures love very well. I'm not talking about the sex and lust part of love here. (He does a great job at that, too!) The love that blossoms between Quell and Hale is a deep and sincere friendship. Something that could easily slip into codependence has a way of staying strong and independent. There are some vulnerable moments where one or the other really needs to lean in and they handle that with strength. They hold each other up. They build each other up. And they are there to catch one another if they start to fall. That's what love is. That's what counts. That's Quell and Hale.

On to the nitty gritty... sex. They make us work for it with this one. A slow burn. I wanted these two to tear each others clothes off so many times before it actually happened. But when it does happen, sooooo worth the wait. They have great chemistry. The romance is there to support the depth of their relationship which I think was really important to capture considering the struggles they go through to get to this point.

Recommend: Yes (unless you don't do LGBTQ content.)
Heady Count: Big Fat Zero!!! Thank God.

Copse

A noun meaning a thicket or growth of trees.

I wonder if the phrase "a copse of trees" is redundant.. hmm.

Review: Unexpected Roomate

TITLE: UNEXPECTED ROOMMATE
AUTHOR: SUZANNE HART
LINK:

First of all, if the male lead is blonde in the story please dont select a brown haired man for your cover art.

Second, punctuation is supposed to help you tell a story. Use it wisely.

I will say that the idea of the story is a good one. I actually liked the premise and the twists that made up the meat of this book. I just had too hard of a time navigating the sentence structure. I'd have to do more research, but I'd wager the author is not a primary english speaker.

I did find a continuity error practically in the first paragraph which I'll likely email the author about. Maybe she can fix it in the ebook.

Recommend: Maybe. If you can ignore the punctuation issues. I've heard not everyone is as picky antitrust as I am.

Book Review: Her Cowboy

TITLE: HER COWBOY
AUTHOR: KAT CATESBY

This is the book the Fifty Shades of Grey should have been.

There is a right way to write steamy dominating sexiness and Kat Catesby knocks it out of the park with this one.  Katie is instantly relatable; always late, horrible ex, scared she wont be good enough at her new job.  Asher took me by surprise.  I figured he would be inconsiderate and gruff but he wasn't. He's hot, demanding, and caring! Who doesn't love a cowboy with a heart!

There is something amazing in the way this book deals with the anxiety and fear Katie has that is treated in a real and honest way.  It really shows how layered these characters are and how many forms of "kink" are absolutely normal.  It also brings to light the ways that abuse doesn't look the same to everyone.  This is an important lesson some learn too late.  I wont give anything away, but this book kept me on my toes til the very end.

Recommend: Yes, definitely
